In times of war, it is crucial to have numerous military bases across the country, especially in Texas, for training, building, and storage. Over time, surplus bases were shut down. For many cities, the base was crucial for their livelihood. Some cities thrived after the closure, while others never fully recovered.

How Some Cities Survived the Base Closures

Some of these bases went on to become other lives. Some became wildlife refuges, others were repurposed for agriculture, and the remaining, a slow life of decay. They’re left for curious explorers to roam through the remnants. Some have all but disappeared, only to be remembered in pictures and memories.
