KWTX reports that the heated debate in the city of Killeen over a proposed cell tower is now heading to a critical vote after intense pushback from neighbors. The tower would be located on the property of First Assembly of God Church. The applicant is seeking a conditional use permit to allow an 85-foot tower on the nearly 2-acre site located at 7432 E. Trimmer Road.

What Do Church Officials Think  About An 85-Foot Tower On The Property?

Church officials have stated that the tower could benefit the area by improving cell service, particularly as residential development continues to grow. However, many Killeen residents have made it clear they do not want a tower located so close to their homes. One resident said the entire neighborhood is opposed to the tower being built anywhere near the area. Neighbors are also concerned about the amount of growth and development taking place and believe the tower could negatively affect property values.

Here Is What Council Melissa Brown Says About The Cell Tower

Killeen City Council Member Melissa Brown said she does not believe there are significant gaps in cell coverage. She added, "I know that other area cell phone towers have reduced property values, and if we have a 100-foot tower, for 100 feet around it you can't build anything else."

What Are Residents Hoping For?

Residents are hoping the council's vote will be postponed until next month's meeting. A request has been made to place the item on the Killeen City Council's August 4 agenda, when city leaders are expected to decide whether the proposed cell tower should be approved.
