One Texas Disease Remains Urgent Threat In The Area
Just last week while at an outdoor gathering for my 7 year old son Leonard's Cub Scout meeting, an unexpected and uninvited guest made an appearance just as the pack meeting was coming to an end in Temple, Texas. Now, scouting is a very friendly activity and takes place in a family setting, but this particular guest will never be welcome at any gathering.
The biggest reason the guest is unwelcome is due to its consistent connection to disease and pestilence. The mosquito is the deadliest animal on the planet, and it is frightening just how many ways these silent killers can do you in.
What immediate danger is the Texas mosquito posing today?
Earlier this summer we reported that numerous places were experiencing human cases of West Nile Virus in addition to random testing of mosquitoes shown to be carrying the deadly disease. The summer drought help keep down the mosquito breeding grounds, but the recent rains, and cooler temperatures are proving to be a great environment for mosquitoes to make a late 2023 comeback.
The city of Cedar Park has just released a statement that a trap at Brushy Creek has just had its first positive West Nile test in 5 years.
So, the threat of West Nile Virus appears to remain as long as the mosquitoes are swarming. If you do find yourself experiencing symptoms, seek medical treatment immediately.
The mosquito may be small and silent, but it is still the most dangerous threat to humans in the animal kingdom. If you need a different tiny insect to be afraid of, let me introduce you to sand flies.
