Waco’s Salvation Army Center Keeps Doors Open Longer to Fight Dangerous Heat Wave

Today, it definitely was heating up outside in Central Texas. When I came to work, I overheard our Central Texas meteorologist say that an Extreme Heat Warning is in effect for Central Texas until 9 PM tonight, as we’re expecting temperatures above 105°. Some places will be a little warmer than others, but overall, it’s going to be a very hot day. We’re also expecting elevated fire weather concerns as dry conditions continue in the forecast.

Dangerous Heat Wave Strikes Central Texas

She also said there’s a possibility of rain happening Wednesday and Thursday, but as of right now, our main concern is making sure everyone stays cool. The Salvation Army in Waco is doing its part by providing relief from these triple-digit heat waves, according to KWTX. They have opened a cooling station for the community at 300 Webster Avenue in downtown Waco.

Waco Salvation Army Offers Refuge with Extended Cooling Center Hours

The policy is that the building stays open weekdays from 1 PM to 4 PM when temperatures reach 95° or more. Of course, if the current extreme weather continues, they will extend their hours. Major Jeff Miracle, who is the corps officer in charge of Waco, says they open any day they feel like the weather is going to hit 100° or above. That would mean they’ll stay open every day after breakfast until 4:30 PM.

What Should Texans Do and Not Do During A Heat Wave?

I can’t stress it enough: if you are someone who is in need of assistance getting out of the heat, by all means, head to your closest cooling center. Hydrate with plenty of water, take breaks in the shade, and wear light-colored, loose-fitting clothing. And please remember, never leave your children or pets in any vehicle. Central Texas weather can be miserable, but that doesn’t mean we can’t handle it properly. Stay cool, stay safe, and look out for one another.
