It's hard to believe how many animals reside in the Lone Star State. With the surface area the state takes up, there's bound to be an animal you haven't seen in a long time. Some may be larger than expected, while others may be smaller and not seen as often.

One thing is for sure, with the amount of animals around the state, the climate has to be right for them to stay in Texas. But as you can imagine, as time goes on, so does the weather in Texas. Not everyone can handle the heat we go through here!

But heat is indeed affecting this one animal we'll talk about today, as well as the area of Texas itself that might cause extinction. We are of course talking about The Texas Kangaroo Rat.

Potential Extinction Of The Texas Kangaroo Rat

You may not have ever heard of this little animal, and that's mainly because Texas Kangaroo Rat is more of a nighttime animal. According to Texas Parks and Wildlife, they hideaway via usage of mesquite trees. These trees help them get to their homes underground.

But the little animal has seen a decrease in population due to multiple factors, as reported by the Center for Biological Diversity. Recent litigation from the center has caused the U.S Fish and Wildlife Service to put forth the motion to help protect the Texas Kangaroo Rat.

The proposal, first released in August of 2023, would put 597,069 acres in Texas as a important habitat for the little animal.

Hopefully this comes through, as the Texas Kangaroo Rat is very important for the ecological order of the state.
