Wild Public Access Television Shows That We Loved Watching in Texas
The world of television can be pretty crazy, especially when talking about public access television. People can create tv shows where they talk about or show anything; Texas has seen its share of wild public access television shows in the past. Here are some examples of tv gold from Texas' past:
Who can forget the adventures on Homeless in Denton?
About 20 years ago, people were able to watch a truly unique show on cable tv called "Homeless in Denton". It was the creation of Sam Repress that ran on tv from 2005-2006 & it focused on...well these two guys that were "homeless" in Denton, TX.
Amazingly the episodes are still available to watch on Sam's YouTube page.
Austin in the 90s was the perfect time for rAw TiMe
The show that gave us one of the most unapologetic & coolest females host on public tv, rAw TiMe aired in the late 90s on Austin televisions. The premise was pretty simple; the host, Tiffy TinaRena, would invite musicians onto the show & promote concerts around the Austin area. She would also be known for her insults to the callers (although if you've seen show, you know that some of them had it coming).
Sadly TinaRena has been absent from the internet; but if she ever came back, I'm pretty sure she would have a huge fan base ready to welcome her back. While many of the episodes are lost, there are many clips from rAw TiMe on YouTube, which means you can find some of TinaRena's best moments to watch.
(Some of these clips might be NSFW)
Who didn't love Cooking with the Cola Sisters?
Staying in Austin, people who had cable tv in the mid-2000s, will remember Cookin' With The Cola Sisters. Arcie (from Coldspring, Texas) and Shasta (from Austin) Cola became well known for their cooking...with alcohol and unique ingredients. They would also talk about various topics like the President of the United States, making fun of the "Man" and the Apocalypse...yeah they would talk about anything and EVERYTHING.
The Cola Sisters even were voted "Best Public Access TV Show" by the readers of the Austin Chronicle.
While sadly, like many of these old tv shows, much of the show is lost but there are several different clips that still exist.
Dallas is home to the one and only Screaming Preacher
While he was originally from Kingston, Ontario, Jonathan Bell would move to Dallas to spread his teachings of God in his...unique approach during the early 90s. He was only on tv for 2 episodes, but everyone who watched him saw just how "unique" Jonathan's teachings were. He would earn the nickname: The Screaming Preacher.
Before he became an internet star, Alex Jones had his own public access show
Yup. Long before InfoWars became an internet show, Dallas' Alex Jones had his OWN cable tv show in Austin during the mid-90s. In case you were wondering, yes. Alex talked about the same topics he did back then as he does now.
Even though these shows are no longer on cable tv, many of these shows continue to live on thanks to the power of YouTube. I definitely wouldn't mind a return of rAw TiMe; but until then, we have these gems of the past to watch whenever we want.
