If you're looking for a new furry friend and commit to loving and caring for them their entire lives, this is the weekend to adopt and save a life.

The Killeen Animal Shelter is nearing capacity and will offer free adoptions on May 29 and 30. Fees will be waived for animals that are sterilized, vaccinated, and microchipped. Standard rates will apply to other animals.

Dogs and cats of different ages, breeds, sizes, and temperaments need homes forever, and the shelter depends on the public to adopt them. Anyone can view animals available for adoption online at KilleenTexas.gov/Animals.

Killeen Animal Shelter is located at 3118 Commerce Drive. Regular adoption hours are Monday through Saturday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Sunday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. The shelter will be closed on Memorial Day.

The shelter actively seeks volunteers to care for and interact with the animals. Those interested in volunteering may sign up online or call 254-526-4455.

Even though I don't own any pets at the moment, I feel like my two-year-old loves dogs.

My wife takes him to the dog park mostly to watch the furry creatures play, and sometimes with the owner's permission he will pet them.

Growing up, my family owned a German shepherd dog named "prince". I loved that dog.

I think I was at the age of 6. I wandered off to the park a few blocks from my house, and our dog prince walked with me for protection, I guess.

My family told me that they started looking for me and asked people in the neighborhood if they'd seen me.

Someone told them that they'd spotted me in the park with a dog. Prince would never leave my side!

In the future, I feel like we will have to get a pet for our son since he loves them so much. Shelter pets make great companions and are so grateful for a loving home, so we'll be looking at adopting when the time comes.
