A Killeen man accused of abandoning his daughter at a daycare center earlier this month has been charged with assaulting a police officer during his arrest.

Jail records indicate Antonio Heath, 24, was booked into the Bell County Jail on Saturday, November 18. He's been charged with third degree felony assault on a public servant, and remained in the Bell County Jail Thursday in lieu of $100,000 bond.

Our news partner, KWTX, reports that Heath left his daughter at a daycare facility in the 1200 block of WS Young Drive on Thursday, November 16. Employees reported the dropoff around 1 PM, telling police they child had never been to the daycare before and they did not know the man who left her there.

Witnesses had written down the man's license plate number, which police traced to the Bridgewater Retreat Apartment complex at 600 West Hallmark Avenue in Killeen.

An officer located Heath's apartment and spoke with him. When asked if he had left the child at the daycare center, Heath reportedly said yes and that he no longer wanted the girl.

When Heath attempted to close his door, he and the officer struggled. As the officer tried to use his taser, Heath grabbed it away. Other officers managed to take Heath into custody.

KWTX reports that the child is now in the custody of a family member.

Police have not said if Heath will face charges connected to abandoning his child.
