Beginning today, the City of Killeen is suspending all recycling services until further notice. However, regular trash collection will continue.

NOTE: The City of Temple will continue curbside pickup of recyclables. However, these materials will be diverted to a landfill until further notice. We're told the direct handling of these items at the City's recycling facility will be suspended until services can resume in compliance with recommended health protocols.

it's not just recycling pickup that's affected, either. The has closed the Killeen Recycling Center, and will not offer commercial or move-in box collection. All recycling trailers are closed, and service is suspended at the the Killeen Transfer Station.

The reasoning behind the suspension of service is that processing recyclable materials requires employees to have contact with collected items. Since there is no automated system in place, the City feels suspending services was necessary to minimized the potential exposure of employees and the public to the COVID-19 virus.

"Residential and commercial bulk item collection and construction and demolition debris collection are also suspended until further notice," a statement from the City of Killeen reads. "For bulk items and excess waste, the Transfer Station will remain open for normal business hours. Residents may dispose of up to 300 pounds free once per month with a current City utility bill."

Because regular trash and residential brush collection are automated, these services will continue without interruption. However, the City says overload containers with trash extending above the container rim may not be collected.

"The City of Killeen is taking action to protect the health and safety of our employees and citizens.," the City states. "We recognize the impacts of these service changes and apologize for the inconveniences they cause."
