Most Crowdfunded Feature Film in History Comes to Austin [EXCLUSIVE VIDEO]
Austin-based online entertainment company Rooster Teeth has made history with their funding effort for a new feature film, called Lazer Team, raising their initial goal of $650,000 in only ten hours and reaching a total of almost $2.5 million dollars to become the most funded film project in the history of crowdfunding platform Indiegogo.
"Our audience has once again amazed us with their overwhelming, record-breaking support. We are proud to be the #1 most funded film on Indiegogo... and with a totally new property. In a world filled with sequels and reboots, Lazer Team is a brand new IP being made possible by the people who want to see it. That is what crowdfunding is all about," said Burnie Burns, Co-Founder and Creative Director of Rooster Teeth, the giants behind Red vs. Blue, the longest-running web series in history, and parent company of numerous popular YouTube channels, like Achievement Hunter's Let's Play and recently-launched news source The Know.
KTEM sat down with Matt Hullum, CEO of Rooster Teeth, at gaming and internet-focused convention RTX in Austin, Texas—which drew over 30,000 attendees this year—to talk about the production.
Rooster Teeth describes Lazer Team as the story of four "idiots" who accidentally bind themselves to a power-suit, designed by benevolent aliens and intended for a Champion of Earth to combat an oncoming threat from the stars. The sci-fi comedy is set to begin production in August, aiming for a 2015 release.
