People Across the UK Step Outside to Applaud Healthcare Workers
Healthcare workers across the globe are waging a war right now. They're at the front lines of the battle against COVID-19.
No words could ever be enough to thank the nurses, doctors, first responders, and countless other health and safety workers trying to slow the charge of an invisible enemy.
So many times, actions speak louder than words. That was certainly the case Thursday night as people across the United Kingdom stepped out onto their porches and balconies to applaud health workers.
The applause was part of the #ClapForOurCarers campaign, the goal of which was to try to lift the spirits of National Health Service workers and show solidarity.
Being the nerd that I am, I have a number of friends from around the globe who join me in online games. I spend a great deal of time chatting with them, especially now that they're self-quarantining along with so many other people.
One of these friends, a proud Brit, told me this morning that he and his parents (who are staying with him for safety and company) couldn't help but tear up as they heard all their friends and neighbors filling the night air with applause and cheers. I'm sure he's not alone.
Another Brit friend said he felt a little silly standing there clapping at first, but as more people stepped out and joined in, he was swept up in the moment and proud to be a part of it. (Some people, he said, were even lighting fireworks.)
How great would it be if we could organize something like this in the U.S., or even just here in Bell County? It would be such a great way to show not only our healthcare workers, but all the people continuing to work and keep society going during all this, that we are incredibly grateful for what they're doing.
I would definitely join in. Wouldn't you?
