The Perot Foundation of Dallas announced last week that it will donate $1 million to Planned Parenthood of Greater Texas with the stated goal of helping to provide healthcare and education services to women.

The Perot Foundation, established by wealthy businessman and former presidential candidate Ross Perot, donated the money on an undesignated basis, so the organization will be able to use the funds for the general mission of the organization. The Perot family has been a long-time supporter of Planned Parenthood, as are several other wealthy Republican families. One such family, which wished to remain anonymous, donated $65 million in June.

For nearly 100 years Planned Parenthood has helped to educate men and women regarding family planning and general family health. Our family has supported this nonprofit for many years because we are impressed with the work they do — providing birth control, scientifically-based education, breast health exams, and basic life-saving healthcare for women who cannot afford services otherwise.

Last winter, Texas transitioned to the Texas Women’s Health Program, which essentially cut off funding to Texas Planned Parenthood providers. In June of this year, Governor Perry signed into law a package of abortion restrictions that opponents say crippled women’s health providers in the state.
