The Leander Police Department recently announced the identity of a woman who was killed in a stabbing as their very own police dispatcher.

According to a report from the Leander Police Department, Miles Speight, 19, is believed to have stabbed and killed his mother, Rowena Speight, 53, following some sort of dispute.

Rowena had been employed with the Leander Police Department as a Telecommunications Officer since 2016.

The Leander Police Department posted the following statement on their Facebook page:

"We are deeply saddened to announce the tragic loss of one of our own, Telecommunications Officer Rowena Speight. Yesterday was one of the hardest days for our department as we investigated an early morning domestic violence incident that resulted in the death of one of our own. Rowena has served in the Leander Police Department as a Telecommunicator since 2016, and she will always be remembered for her bold spirit, her love of the Lord, and her passion to serve others. Rowena will be sincerely missed, because her smile was infectious and her company always welcome. We want to thank the Leander community and all of our partner agencies for their support as we navigate through this difficult process. #rs1087"

Around 2:43 AM on March 31, 2021 Leander police responded to the 12000 block of Hero Way West to an Agency Assist EMS for a possible stabbing. When authorities arrived on the scene, they found Rowena on the floor unresponsive with multiple stab wounds. Emergency personnel performed life saving measures, but she was declared dead at the scene.

According to police, Rowena's son, Miles, had fled the scene on foot. While searching for Miles, Leander police asked residents to stay in their homes and lock their doors. At around 7:05 AM the same day, Miles was taken into custody by the Cedar Park Police Department.

Miles Speight is being charged with murder and was transported to Williamson County jail Wednesday, March 31.
