If you've got old chemicals and fluorescent lamps lying around and need to safely and responsibly dispose of them, head to the Killeen Conference Center on Saturday, June 3.

Killeen and Harker Heights residents can stop by 3601 South WS Young Drive in Killeen between 9 AM and 2 PM with items such as petroleum products, corrosives, fertilizers, cleaners, pesticides, paint, automotive liquids, and even fluorescent lamps. The City will then dispose of them for free in a way that ensures they don't end up in a landfill or in local water systems.

The items should be in their original containers with original labels if possible. If not, they should be carefully secured, and any leaking containers should be placed in a spill-proof container or bag.

Prohibited materials include ammunition, electronics, explosives, medical waste, radioactive material, compressed glass cylinders, and tires.

For a complete list of what you can and what you shouldn't bring, click here to visit the City of Killeen's Hazardous Waste Collection Guidelines.

The event is intended for individual citizens, though small businesses may be eligible to dispose of hazardous waste on May 24. Interested businesses should schedule an appointment by calling 554-7572.

No materials will be accepted from large businesses or agricultural operations.
