A Central Texas middle school student was taken into custody Tueday after a loaded handgun was discovered in his backpack.

As reported by KWTX, the 14-year-old attends Salado Junior High School. When two fellow students realized the 8th grader was in possession of a weapon on campus, they notified an administrator at the school. The boy's backpack was removed from a locker in the athletics field house, and a .32 caliber handgun containing seven rounds was found inside.

In a statement Wednesday, a representative of the Bell County Sheriff's Department said, “The gun did contain seven rounds in the magazine, (but) no round was chambered."

The student was taken into custody without any incident shortly after 12:30 PM.
