Score One For The Good Guys – 700 Gallons of Liquid Meth Confiscated by Texas Police

An estimated 700 gallons of liquid meth is off the streets of Texas.

KXAN reports that Pharr PD is responsible for getting about $10 million of meth off the streets after one of their officers saw three men filling up 5-gallon buckets with liquid from several 55-gallon barrels.

The Pharr Fire Department noticed some crystallization forming on the barrels and had the liquid tested. That's when they discovered it was liquid methamphetamine worth an estimated street value of $10 million.

Pharr Chief of Police Andy Harvey said in the release:

“This massive drug seizure impacts way beyond our region where it was headed. This stemmed from a patrol officer’s attention to detail when he observed something out of the ordinary and he used our resources to further investigate. This is great policing. I want to thank our federal DEA partners who always respond and work alongside us, they are outstanding.”

The Assistant United States Attorney will take over the case due to the amount of the seizure.

What is Meth

Methamphetamine, or meth, is a drug that affects the central nervous system and is highly addictive. It's been classified by the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration as a Schedule II stimulant.

According to a report from the University of Texas at Austin, which looked at drug use in Texas in 2021, methamphetamine is still the most abused drug and usage continues to increase.

Texas Drug Laws

Drug laws in Texas are pretty fierce. According to The Law Office of Thayer Williamson, possession of under 1 gram can land you in behind bars for 180 days to two years, 1 to 4 grams can get you two to 20 years, and between 4 and 200 grams could get you between five and 99 years.

Getting this much off the streets at once is great, but the steady flow of illegal drugs into Texas is a fight that will continue.
