A McLennan County K-9 deserves major praise for a job well done!

According to a report from our news partners at KWTX, Shaka, a K9 with the Woodway Police Department recently suffered a rattlesnake bite while trying to protect her handler.

How it Happened

Late on Thursday evening, Shaka and her handler Ofc. Joshua Hilliard were in their backyard, when Shaka noticed something. Immediately Shaka alerted Ofc. Hilliard to something at his feet.

When Ofc. Hillard lit his flashlight, the pair discovered a 3 foot rattlesnake coiled up and ready to strike!

Shaka jumped into action to protect her handler and was bitten twice on the snout. Shaka was immediately taken to the Waco Animal Emergency Clinic and given anti-venom, and Friday morning was reported at South Bosque Veterinary Clinic for monitoring.

"We are thankful for the quick thinking of her handler, and the around the clock care of our area's veterinary professionals, for getting her through this scary time," the Woodway Police Department wrote.

What We Can Do Now

Shaka was nominated for the Aftermath K9 Grant. The Woodway Police Department states that, "winning grant money would allow our department to not only continue running a successful K9 program, but it would also help cover emergency situations such as this one."

LOOK: 15 Pets You CAN'T Own in the City of Temple

Temple is a super pet-friendly place to live, but there are some animals city officials would really rather you not try to tame and keep in your home. Let's take a look at a few of the critters on the banned list.

These Are the Cutest Pet Costumes You've Sent Us So Far

It's almost Hoooooowwwwwwwwl-oween! *ahem* I mean, Halloween, and that means everyone's getting dressed up and celebrating spooky season. That includes our dogs and cats, who can have just as much fun as us!

Now through Halloween night, we're asking the good people of Central Texas to share pics of their pet's Halloween getup.

While it's fun to share pics anyway, you could actually win a Pet Prize Pack from Posh Paws Pet Resort and Salon in Temple valued at over $200!

Also, this contest is open to pets of all shapes and sizes, so if your pet gecko or tarantula can sport a witch's hat or devil horns like nobody's business, let's see those pics!

You can submit your best furry (or scaly) friend's Halloween boo-tique beauty shots using the entry form here, or you can use the Submit Photo/Video feature in our free app!

Let's look at a few of the photos we've gotten so far.
