Sending Get Well Soon Wishes to This Brave Woodway K9 Who Was Bit!
A McLennan County K-9 deserves major praise for a job well done!
According to a report from our news partners at KWTX, Shaka, a K9 with the Woodway Police Department recently suffered a rattlesnake bite while trying to protect her handler.
How it Happened
Late on Thursday evening, Shaka and her handler Ofc. Joshua Hilliard were in their backyard, when Shaka noticed something. Immediately Shaka alerted Ofc. Hilliard to something at his feet.
When Ofc. Hillard lit his flashlight, the pair discovered a 3 foot rattlesnake coiled up and ready to strike!
Shaka jumped into action to protect her handler and was bitten twice on the snout. Shaka was immediately taken to the Waco Animal Emergency Clinic and given anti-venom, and Friday morning was reported at South Bosque Veterinary Clinic for monitoring.
"We are thankful for the quick thinking of her handler, and the around the clock care of our area's veterinary professionals, for getting her through this scary time," the Woodway Police Department wrote.
What We Can Do Now
Shaka was nominated for the Aftermath K9 Grant. The Woodway Police Department states that, "winning grant money would allow our department to not only continue running a successful K9 program, but it would also help cover emergency situations such as this one."
