42-year-old Harris County Deputy Sandeep Dhaliwal was fatally shot Friday during a routine traffic stop. Today, the Houston Texans observed a moment of silence in his honor.

KTRK-TV reports that Dhaliwal stopped 47-year-old Robert Solis in northwest Harris County shortly before 12:30 PM Friday. According to fellow deputies who reviewed the slain officer's dashcam footage, Dhaliwal was walking back to his patrol vehicle when the suspect exited his vehicle and fired at him, striking in the head before speeding away. A witness rendered aid, but Dhaliwal's injuries proved fatal. He passed away at an area hospital.

Solis was later spotted at a business less than a quarter of a mile away and taken into custody shortly after. He's charged with capital murder.

KHOU-TV reports that guests and staff at NRG Stadium observed a moment of silence Sunday in honor of Dhaliwal.

The Associated Press reports that Dhaliwal will be laid to rest at  a traditional Sikh religious ceremony Monday morning. KTRK reports that Dhaliwal was the first Sikh member of the Harris County Sheriff's Department, and was a 10-year-veteran of the department. He leaves behind a wife and three children.
