UPDATE: Police have identified the victim of Thursday's shooting as 16-year-old Fernando Martinez of Belton.


 

Police announce Friday morning, August 28 that they have arrested a 16-year-old male in connection to Thursday's shooting on Smith Street.

The suspect was arrested at 11:15 PM Thursday after police say he tried to evade them in a vehicle in Temple.

The identity of the suspect was not immediately released due to his age. He's been booked into the Bell County Juvenile Detention Center and charged with murder.


 

The Belton Police Department is investigating after a teenager was fatally shot Thursday afternoon.

Police responded to a report of a shooting near an outdoor basketball court in the 400 block of Smith Street at 5:02 PM.

When they arrived, officers found a male in his teens suffering from two gunshot wounds. He was transported to a local hospital in critical condition. At 9:34 PM, police announced that the victim has passed away.

Police had not released the victim's name or age Thursday night, but said that information will be made public after his family have been notified.

Investigators say the shooting occurred after a dispute, and that the victim knew the shooter. Witnesses described seeing a white Chevrolet sedan speeding away from the area after the shooting.
