SAGINAW, Texas (AP) — A North Texas teenager suspected in the suffocation death of his 6-year-old neighbor is hospitalized after exchanging gunfire with officers who were trying to arrest him.

Authorities say 17-year-old Tyler Holder was shot Tuesday after he seriously wounded a police detective.

The detective is expected to recover. Authorities haven't released Holder's condition and the hospital refused to do so.

A capital murder arrest warrant affidavit says authorities suspect that Holder suffocated Alanna Gallagher with plastic bags taped around her neck July 1. The affidavit says the girl was sexually assaulted and Holder's DNA matched evidence found on her body.

Holder's mother, Kimberly Holder, referred questions to her attorneys. One told the Fort Worth Star-Telegram in an email that Kimberly Holder was in shock and worried about her son's condition.
