The Temple Chamber of Commerce hosted the first Operation Winter Wonderland, treating more than 50 children of deployed military to an afternoon in Temple Sunday.

Kids were treated to a visit from Santa, holiday treats, crafts and a tree lighting. They also wrote Christmas cards to family and loved ones overseas.

"It's just an opportunity to just reach out and just let them know we care, we love them, and that we're here just to make life a little easier," said Rod Henry, Temple Chamber president.

"Right now my kids are struggling. You know, daddy wasn't here for Thanksgiving; 'Did dad get Thanksgiving dinner?' You know, they're worried about Christmas. So I think events like this is really good for them," said Desiree Green, whose husband is deployed to Afghanistan.

American Legion Post 133 worked with the chamber, in conjunction with Family Readiness Support Assistants from the Texas Army National Guard.
