It's no secret that Temple is a great place to live, but a recent survey helps shine light on one of the reasons why.

The Council for Community and Economic Research has listed Temple as the least expensive urban area in which to buy groceries in the United States.

As part of the C2ER's recently published third quarter 2016 cost of living report. the organization collected over 90,000 food prices from across the U.S.

Compared to the average price index of 100 in the 261 cities surveyed, Temple ranked as the least expensive at 77.5.

In fact, Texas urban centers took 4 of the top 5 slots when it came to affordable groceries with McAllen at #3, Waco at #4, and Harlingen at #5. Jackson-Madison County, Tennessee took the #2 spot for a combo-buster.

Cities in Hawaii and Alaska made up the top 5 most expensive places for groceries, with Honolulu placing first.

The report also determined the highest and lowest cost of living indexes. Although Temple didn't make the list of top 10 least expensive, three other Texas cities did: McAllen at #1, Harlingen at #2, and Wichita Falls at #7. New York, Hawaii, and California dominated the top 10 most expensive list.
