The Temple Public Library is looking in young people who want to serve their community and spend time at our city's beautiful library this summer.

The library will accept youth applications for summer volunteering Monday, April 22nd through Friday, May 24th. Volunteer opportunities are available for ages 12 through 17 who are motivated, love reading, and have a positive attitude.

Summer Library volunteers help in a variety of areas such as assisting with registration of participants for the summer reading program and distributing incentives when the participants bring in their reading logs. They also assist with craft preparation and various organizational projects.

“Volunteering looks great on resumes and college applications," said Youth Services Librarian Erin Gaines. “It's also an awesome way to give back to your library and community.”

Summer volunteers work a single two-hour shift per week. Applications will be available at the Youth Services Reference Desk beginning April 22nd.

To find out more, contact the Temple Public Library Youth Services Department at (254) 298-5557.

The City of Temple is also looking for people interesting in becoming lifeguards.

Spring Break is here and summer is just around the corner. That means people will be flocking to local pools and water parks, and to make sure everyone's safe while diving and splashing, the City of Temple is looking to train and hire lifeguards.

Lifeguards who train to work with the City of Temple only pay $55 for training. That gets you site-specific Red Cross certification good for an entire year. The classes will teach you everything you need to know to prevent, recognize, and respond to aquatic, breathing, and cardiac emergencies. You'll also learn how to treat injuries and sudden illness until emergency medical services arrive.

There's an online course that covers the basics (make sure you have regular access to a working email account and internet connection), followed by in-person lifeguard training. You'll be responsible for enforcing pool rules and maintaining order, so bring a positive attitude and strong people skills!

You'll also need to bring a valid driver's license, along with a few handy skills:

You must be able to swim 300 yards nonstop using only the front-crawl and the breast-stroke. (Goggles are suggested for this part.)

You must be able to swim 20 yards, dive 10-12 feet to retrieve a 10-pound brick, and swim 20 yards back holding the brick with both hands in a minute and 40 seconds without the use of goggles.

You must be able to tread water for 2 minutes without the use of your hands.

Pay starts at $9.13/hr. This is a fantastic opportunity for young people looking for a fun summer job, as well as anyone who loves helping people and being poolside.

Class dates are as follows:

April 4-7: Thu/Fri 5p-9p; Sa/Su 8a-5p

April 11-14: Thu/Fri 5p-9p; Sa/Su 8a-5p

May 9-12: Thu/Fri 5p-9p; Sa/Su 8a-5p

If you're interested in applying, check out the City of Temple's Lifeguards website or inquire at Sammons Indoor Pool: 2220 West Avenue D in Temple or (254) 298-5930. More information is available here.
