Texas Girl Battling Cancer Named Honorary Texas Ranger

A very special little girl was recently named an honorary Texas Ranger, and the Texas House passed a resolution to commend her perseverance as she battles cancer.

The Texas Department of Public Safety welcomed six-year-old Abigail Arias of Angleton to its ranks March 1st at the Capitol Building in Austin. Abigail was presented with a pair of custom cowgirl boots, a Texas Rangers hat, and a badge. As part of her first day on duty, she got to ride a Mounted Patrol Unit horse named Chief, and got to spend time with K-9 officer Boudine. She even got to hang out in a DPS cruiser and work the lights and sirens.

“Everyone who meets Abigail quickly sees her strength and tenacity, and can’t help but admire her, and the Texas Rangers are no exception,” said Texas Ranger Chief Collins. “The Rangers are incredibly fortunate to be able to call her one of our own, now and forever.”

“Abigail is a brave young Texan, and her moral and physical courage serve as an inspiration to all Texans,” said DPS Director McCraw. “On behalf of the entire DPS family, it was a great honor to appoint Abigail Arias to the position of Honorary Texas Ranger.”

In addition to her swearing in as a Ranger, Abigail was honored by the Texas House of Representatives, which passed House Resolution 377 to honor her courage in her fight with cancer and congratulate her on becoming an honorary Ranger.

“Abigail has inspired millions with her courage, fighting spirit, and love for law enforcement, and I am so proud that she has fulfilled her dream of becoming a Texas Ranger,” said Texas Speaker of the House Dennis Bonnen. “It was my great privilege to stand by Abigail's side as she was sworn in. The Texas Rangers are lucky to have her.”

This isn't Abigail's first time being named an honorary law officer. She was also recently made an honorary officer with the Freeport Police Department after Chief Ray Garivey heard of Abigail's dream of becoming an officer.

Our thoughts and prayers are with Abigail as she continues her fight. Some day she could become an official officer and help others overcome hardships.
