Texas Tech University Students Wrap Will Rogers in Black to Mourn Fallen Officer
Students at Texas Tech University have wrapped the famous Will Rogers statue in black to mourn the death of a police officer who was fatally shot on campus earlier this week.
KCBD reports that the group which usually wraps the statue in red before each home game, the Texas Tech Saddle Tramps, also has a tradition of wrapping the statue in black to mourn the loss of a member of the Tech alumni or community.
The statue has been wrapped in black to mourn the loss of Coach Spike Dykes, after the Oklahoma Crash, and after 9-11. The Tech students also wrapped the statue with a blue ribbon to support members of law enforcement who have given all to protect the communities they serve.
48-year-old Officer Floyd East Jr. was shot and killed in the line of duty Monday evening on the Texas Tech Campus. The suspect, 19-year-old Hollis A. Daniels, has reportedly confessed the crime, saying he "f---ed up". He has been charged with capital murder of a police officer.
