Local Tradition

As a transplant to Temple, I'm not aware of the awesome things the community has to offer. Luckily for me, my boyfriend has grown up in the area and shows me all the amazing traditions in and out of town.

Last year was my first time attending BLORA's Nature in Lights, and it was so beautiful. I definitely recommend making that a priority this holiday season if you've never attended. Anyways, while traveling to BLORA, we drove over the Belton Dam, and my boyfriend told me of a super sweet tradition for couples.

Love on Lock

Apparently, people buy locks to write their name on and then place it on the fence of the Belton Dam. How ridiculously cute is that? I've heard of places in other countries doing this before, but I never knew of a place in Central Texas.

We've passed over the Belton Dam plenty of times since then, but never stopped. Just recently we decided to partake in the tradition, and stopped in at a store to purchase a lock. We wrote our names together with a marker, and then took a short trip over to the Belton Dam.

We couldn't have picked a better time, because the sun was just beginning to set and the scene was absolutely breathtaking. After taking some time to look at the locks before us, we chose our perfect spot. Our love lock is now placed at the dam, and I hate to be cheesy, but it really was super sweet and the perfect date.

As tradition goes, if you purchase a lock with a key, you throw it out to "sea" (lake), so that your love can never be unlocked.

Head's up though, fellas - your lady definitely will ask if you've participated in the tradition with anyone else.
