Unknown Future for Local Mobile Home Park

County Squire Mobile Home Park, which contains 130 homes, is facing an uncertain future.

Owner Kip Lewis has not been authorized to rehabilitate the park after his plan presentation to Harker Heights City Council in April.

Lewis planned to bring in 138 new homes, but doing so would violate an ordinance requiring mobile homes to sit at least 35 feet apart. This ordinance could be overridden by a planned development permit, but another ordinance excludes mobile home parks from permits. Lewis will present his case to the Planning and Zoning Commission later this month.

City Manager Steve Carpenter has mixed feelings about the permits. The city faces a dilemma between continued deterioration of the homes and the possibility of building something with more value.

Residents of the park have stated that repairs are needed, but Propety Manager Tiana Bailey claims nothing can be done without support from the city.

Lewis would like to change the park's name to Indian Trail Estates and also redevelop adjacent Indian Trail Mobile Home Park.
