Lampasas County Commissioners have decided to allow voters to decide the fate of a tax freeze for senior citizens.

The freeze would benefit the 14.7 percent of resident who are aged 65 or older, but opponents to the proposition cite the financial burden which would be placed on the remainder of the population.

Resident Jim Anderson supported the freeze, saying that younger people would bear a greater burden, but would also have longer to improve their situation. He also believes the county can replace lost revenue. Anderson expressed the idea that seniors might use the benefits from the freeze to invest locally, thereby giving money back to the county.

County Auditor Chris Munn proposed three scenarios, comparing revenue for the county over the next seven years.

County Judge Wayne Boultinghouse spoke against the proposal, noting that other local counties with a freeze in place have revenue sources which Lampasas County lacks.
