I must admit that I am a sucker for a heartwarming Army “Homecoming” video, but it’s the videos that feature young kids seeing their parents for the first time in months that really tug at my heart because as a mom myself, I know that my son goes crazy after not seeing me for just one day!

Earlier this week I came across a video on the Anthony Independent School Districts Facebook page that showed the precious moment U.S. Army sergeant, Samantha Romero, surprised her two young boys after being deployed for 9 months.

The video had me in tears because being a boy mom is so special and I could tell that Sgt. Romero’s two sons were so relieved and excited to have their mom back.

This is the second time that Sgt. Romero’s two sons have experienced having their mother deployed, but the first deployment happened when they were too young to remember.

“I was nervous seeing how they would react and being able to give them a hug in what feels like forever,” Sgt. Romero said.

Sgt. Romero arrived at Anthony Middle School on Monday afternoon intending to surprise her two sons, Aiden and Dylan Romero who had no idea that their mom was back home.

The first to be surprised was Aiden. In the video Sgt. Romero is seen walking into his math classroom. Aiden has no idea his mom is behind him and when Sgt. Romero tapped him on his shoulder. He turned around, paused for a second and after a few seconds he realized it was his mom!

“I was very happy to see her because, like she said, being away from her for nine months when I’m so used to seeing her every day -- I missed her a lot,” said Aiden.

Aiden then hugged his mom tight as the rest of the class clapped for the heartwarming reunion.

Next up was Sgt. Romero’s other son Dylan. For this surprise, Dylan’s teacher told students to turn their attention to the door for a special guest. Little did Dylan know that the special guest would be his mom coming home after being away for 9 months.

Once Sgt. Romero walked through the doors Dylan ran to his mom and gave her a big hug.

“It’s nice because she has been here for every other birthday. I didn’t think she’d make it to this one, but I’m happy she’s here now,” Dylan said.

Both boys knew their mom would return home during February, but they had no idea she would walk into their classrooms just one day before Dylan’s 13th birthday.

Talk about a great birthday surprise! I hope the birthday celebration is full of tons of hugs and laughter for Dylan, his brother, and their mom.

Thank you for your service, Sgt. Romero, and thank you for providing a special moment that was able to give us all a break from all the hard news happening around us.
