A Belton man whose murder trial was scheduled to begin Monday entered a guilty plea before jury selection could begin.

61-year-old Karl Lee Wiggins was accused of killing 41-year-old Edward Charles Hermann in 2014. Potential jurors in the case were sent home after Wiggins entered his plea before 27th District Judge John Gauntt. Wiggins' sentencing has been scheduled for May 28.

Police were called to the 2900 block of FM 2410 just after 9 p.m. on June 4, 2014. When they arrived, they found Hermann with a critical gunshot wound. When officers ordered Wiggins to lay down his gun, he pointed it at police. Two officers shot at Wiggins, hitting him twice. Texas Rangers investigated the police action and no charges were filed.

Hermann was taken to Scott & White Hospital in Temple where he later died.
