Plans for a new workout room at S.C. Lee Junior High School in Copperas Cove are on hold after the company contracted for the work retracted its bid.

On Monday, the Copperas Cove Independent School District Board of Trustees voted to scrap the latest bids for the project to create a 4,000-square-foot workout area at the school.

The district had hoped to complete the project and replace an undersized workout area by the end of summer. The project was awarded to Sandor Construction, based in Salado, at a cost of $240,000. The company later cited escalating costs and withdrew the bid.

The district rebid the project, but the two lowest bids of $349,000 from Tom Wright Construction and $383,000 from Pearson Construction far exceeded the $280,000 budgeted for the project.

It is unknown when the board might decide to rebid the project.
