I've seen some weird and wild stuff for sale on Facebook Marketplace, but I about lost my mind today when I came across a listing for "Antique Hamburger Helper" selling for $8,100.

The post went live back in October of 2019, but I didn't come across it until today. My first instinct was that it had to be a joke. After all, who in their right mind would think they're going to fetch that much cash for a box of Salisbury dinner mix from less than a decade ago?

Then again, I really have seen weirder stuff listed for sale on Facebook and Craigslist, so I had to write to the seller and get some answers.

I honestly didn't expect to hear anything back, but Timmy Solar of Troy (my old stomping grounds) wrote me back quickly and confirmed that yes, it was a joke.

"It's not really an antique," Timmy wrote. "I found it in a cupboard in an apartment I moved into. I posted it as a joke because of some of the crazy things you see on Craigslist and whatnot."

Much like the mysterious herbs and spices in a Hamburger Helper flavor packet, reactions to the post have been mixed and weird.

"I’ve had everything ranging from older folks cussing me out and being rude because it’s 'not antique' to people playing along with the joke," Timmy wrote. "The box itself is 2-3 years older than the expiration date."

If, by cosmic chance, you are a Betty Crocker fanatic who collects old boxes of Hamburger Helper, you're out of luck this time. Timmy tells me the box has since been tossed in the trash.

I must admit that part of me really wanted the listing to be serious. A world in which someone earnestly demands thousands of dollars for an expired box of generic processed food from just a few years ago would be an absolutely magical world in which to live.
