We made it! The 2016 Oscars have finally arrived, and we can finally stop speculating on who will win (see our predictions here!) because the Oscar winners were finally handed out last night. Spotlight took home Best Picture, upsetting The Revenant, which had just won both Best Director for Alejandro G. Ińarritu and Best Actor for Leonardo DiCaprio. It was only the 23rd time that the year’s top director didn’t also win Best Picture (it last happened in 2013 when Ang Lee won Best Director for Life of Pi, but Argo won Best Picture). In addition to Best Picture, Spotlight also won Best Original Screenplay, meaning it wound up winning the first and last awards handed out during this years Oscars. It was also the first film since 1952’s The Greatest Show on Earth to win Best Picture and only one other Oscar.

While Spotlight took Best Picture, Mad Max: Fury Road was the night’s biggest winner with a total of six Oscars. The Revenant followed closely behind with four total wins.

Though DiCaprio and Best Actress winner Brie Larson were heavy favorites, that doesn’t mean there weren’t some surprises. Sylvester Stallone missed out on the Best Supporting Actor award, losing out to Mark Rylance of Bridge of Spies. Lady Gaga, who got a standing ovation for her performance of “Til It Happens to You” lost Best Original Song to Sam Smith’s Spectre theme “Writing on the Wall”, which many agreed was one of the weaker Bond songs in recent memory. Finally, Ex Machina, a film that was produced for only $15 million, won Best Visual Effects, beating out a group of nominees (including Star Wars: The Force Awakens) that all cost over $100 million.

A quick recap of the nominees: Alejandro G. Iñarritu stole the hearts of the Academy once again with The Revenant taking the lead with 12 nominations. That was followed by Mad Max: Fury Road with 10 nominations, The Martian with seven, Carol with six and The Big Short and Star Wars: The Force Awakens tied at five.
