Back to school is almost here in Killeen, Texas, and to be honest a lot of us parents are very nervous about our children going back to their classrooms - particularly after what happened in Uvalde.

Those fears will never ago away, but Killeen police have been training to prepare for a nightmare scenario and save lives in the case that it happens here.

GET READY FOR THE SCHOOL YEAR AS  SAFE AS POSSIBLE

I remember at the end of the year last year, a lot of parents like myself kept our children at home due to safety concerns and threats spreading on social media. There was also the horrific killing of those innocent babies at Uvalde - the aftermath of which has put a hole in Texas' heart. But KISD definitely has a plan. Recently the KISD police conducted an active shooter drill.

WHAT IS YOUR PLAN, CHIEF DISHER?

Now of course we don’t want our children to ever have to endure an actual active shooter, but the fact that KISD police Chief Ralph Disher conducted a  drill for our police officers puts my mind at ease just a little.

Police officers set up scenarios on the west side of the Belaire campus near the edge of the playground where the shooter was the first spotter.  The true-to-life scenario had a 15-year-old shooter played by one of the officers, which makes a lot of sense because a lot of times the perpetrators are under the age of 20.

WHAT TOOLS WERE USED FOR THIS TRAINING?

Using 9 mm handguns and chalk-tipped rounds, it’s pretty much the same weight as an actual bullet. Chief Disher says he wanted to do something internal and in-house. Officers welcome the opportunity to go through that kind of training says Disher because it’s close to reality.

Thank you to our local officers for taking student safety seriously and putting their all into training to protect the lives of our children should the worst case scenario actually play out. We just pray that training is never needed.
