Austin Officials Move to Toughen Cellphone Law

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — Austin officials have proposed banning nearly all hand-held cellphone use while driving.

The Austin Public Safety Commission approved a recommendation Monday night to stiffen the city's No Driving or Texting ordinance. The commissioners recommended to the city council that it become illegal to talk, text or use a cellphone behind the wheel of a vehicle. That change includes vehicles stopped at lights or in traffic.

Drivers would still be able to call 911 or talk while parked in a lot or on the shoulder.

It's already illegal to text and drive in the Texas capital, but police say the law is hard to enforce.

The council will hold a hearing Thursday on the creation of the changes.
