The city of Killeen will have a new mayor, that will be sworn in Friday.

What Happened To The Last Killeen Mayor, Jose Segarra?

Mayor Segarra resigned from his office of Mayor, on March,17th because he is running for office to have an at-large council member seat for the May election.

According to a press release put out by the city of Killeen,  Article III, Section 22 of the City Charter states that “if any member of the City Council holding office desires to run for a different office than that which the member holds, at the next election, the member must resign and vacate their present office at least forty (40) days prior to such election and his resignation shall be effective on the date of such resignation.”

He will be succeeded by Debbie Nash King. 

Who Is Debbie Nash-King?

According to the city of Killeen's website:

Debbie Ann Nash-King is currently Mayor Pro-Tem of Killeen, but a native of Pine Bluff, Arkansas. After completing high school, she attended the University of Arkansas- Pine Bluff, where she received a Bachelor’s degree in Social Work. After being commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in the United States Army, she attended the Medical Services Corp Officer’s course and completed her military tour as the Fort Hood Dental Clinic’s company commander. Upon leaving the Army, she immediately entered graduate school and earned a Master’s Degree in Human Resources from Tarleton State University and a Master’s Degree in Social Work from the University of Southern California. She is also an ordained minister.

Ms. Nash-King attended Leadership Killeen and became heavily involved in another kind of service-- volunteering wholeheartedly on behalf of a variety of important causes. She has served as vice president of Killeen’s National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP), secretary of Killeen Volunteers, Inc., and board member of the Killeen Independent School District’s Education Foundation.

Ms. Nash-King is a member of various organizations here in Central Texas such as the f Harker Heights Rotary Club, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., Killeen Sister Cities, Osan Korean Committee (Public Relation Chair), Killeen Branch NAACP, League of United Latin American Citizens 4535 (Board Member), and more.

She will hold the office of Mayor Of Killeen, until the city elects a new one in the May 7th election.
