Ex- educator acquitted for sexual activity with a student
After 4 years, former Midway ISD educator Michael Benns, 39, was acquitted of three counts of sexual activity with a student.
Benns was arrested on Nov. 3, 2015 for sexual assault of a child and indecency with a child by contact.
Benns had been working as a teacher's aide for Midway High School since Jan. 5, 2015. A mother reported her daughter having sex with a teacher to the police in February of 2015, and after a police investigation, Benns was put on unpaid leave.
Midway ISD Superintendent George Kazanas released a message to parents that Benns knew the girl before he started working at the campus. The girl is 21 now and out of Midway High School.
Benns was also a youth pastor at his church, and had members defend him greatly in the case.
Even though he is found not guilty, Benns was still forced to give up his teaching credentials, with little hope of receiving them back.
