Residents and school officials say they feel the sign will help make criminals think twice before committing a crime inside their schools. The message is now outside ALL schools in the district and reads:

ATTENTION: PLEASE BE AWARE THAT THE STAFF AT CLAUDE ISD IS ARMED AND MAY USE WHATEVER FORCE NECESSARY TO PROTECT OUR STUDENTS.

School Superintendent Jeff Byrd compares the sign to "Beware of Dog" or home security signs that serve as a warning and not necessarily a threat.

Of note is that the school board recently approved conceal carry on all of Claude's campuses, and since then the signs appeared in red letters out in front of the area schools. The town does not have it's own police department, but all the schools do have their own security cameras. Superintendent Byrd says arming the staff will play a vital role in the event a gunman enters the school.
