Highway 190 From Belton to Copperas Cove Now Interstate 14
The Texas Transportation Commision and the Gulf Coast Strategic Highway Coalition announced this week that a 25-mile stretch of Highway 190 from the junction of Business 190E in Copperas Cove to the junction with I-35 in Belton has been officially designated Interstate 14.
Plans for the designation were announced in December of 2015, when an amendment to a federal transportation bill authored by Texas Congressman Brian Babin of Woodville was passed, then sponsored in the U.S. Senate by Texas Senator John Cornyn.
After a few roadblocks prevented the plan from being approved, it finally passed muster with the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials and the Federal Highway Administration on January 26, 2017.
Major General Ken Cox, president of the Heart of Texas Defense Alliance, stressed the strategic value of bringing the Central Texas Corridor up to interstate standards, not only for easy transport of troops and military equipment across the Gulf State region, but for the improved safety and mobility of civilians and new economic development opportunities.
Work continues to bring more segments of US 190 to interstate standards.
