'OMG guys, you can literally just scan the item anywhere and it'll go through'

How often have you been at the self-checkout kiosk at Walmart on Fourth St. in Longview, Texas or on Jackson St. in Jacksonville or on Hwy. 271 in Gilmer and had an issue with scanning a product? I'm sure plenty. It's not just these three stores its happening at, it happens all over East Texas and beyond.

We're constantly flipping products around trying to locate those barcodes to scan because Walmart has basically forced us to be a cashier thanks to the introduction of the self-checkout registers. What's more frustrating is you've located the barcode but it won't scan. This happens to me quite frequently when I get the 12-pack of sliced sharp cheddar cheese!

Well, it looks like novice cashiers, like you and I, could be receiving some help soon with the scanning of everything in our grocery cart.

A TikTok video has gained more than half-a-million views in just a few days showing the user just pointing the barcode scanner at the product and it recognizes the product and adds it to your total.

Game-changing innovation - hopefully - coming soon. Check this out.

Walmart has quietly partnered with Digimarc and rolled out this new technology in a few test stores with anticipation of it cutting down on theft. TheStreet reports that Digimarc says the "technology involves embedding codes that are “invisible to the human eye” on product packaging, which makes it easier be detected at self-checkout machines."

Now this is innovation that I can get behind, but I'll still be scanning my own products, at least I won't have to fumble around for the bar codes or have to stretch out the package of sharp cheddar cheese to get the barcode to scan.

The move comes from increased shoplifting.

It is reported that Walmart loses nearly $3 billion a year due to theft (Gitnux) from intentional theft to accidental theft. In a statement to TheStreet, a Walmart spokesperson said,

Walmart is always testing new ways to enhance the experiences for our customers, members and associates, and our work with Digimarc is no different.”

There are no details on how quickly this new technology is going to be deployed across their 10,500 store footprint. I'm looking forward to it seeing it arrive in Tyler, Texas soon!
