The former Marine accused of killing Navy SEAL sniper Chris Kyle begins next week in Stephenville.

The jury selection process in the trial of Eddie Ray Routh began Thursday in Erath County, with around 800 potential jurors being given paperwork to fill out ahead of Monday’s official start. Routh 27, is accused of murdering Kyle and Chad Littlefield at a gun range on February 2, 2013. He has pleaded not guilty by way of insanity, and prosecutors have said they will not pursue the death penalty.

Routh’s attorney, Warren St. John, was denied his request to change venues and says he will argue that Routh was mentally unstable at the time of the killings. Presiding Judge Jason Cashon told potential jurors Thursday that they could still serve if they had read Kyle’s autobiography or seen the film ‘American Sniper’.

Routh is currently being jailed in Erath County on $3 million bond. His trial is scheduled to begin February 11.
