Killeen police are investigating after a student was hit by a truck Monday afternoon.

Our partners at News 10 report that the child is a middle school student who was had just exited a school bus near Hilltop Loop and Wales Drive. The child was crossing in front of the bus when he was struck by a truck.

The child was airlifted a local hospital. Their condition was not made public.

Details here are scare, but I would think the bus had its STOP sign and lights activated. Even if it didn't, anyone driving near it should have been on the lookout for children.

I want to remind everyone that under Texas law, drivers are legally obligated to stop when they see a bus' flashing red lights, regardless of the direction their headed. You should go until the bus turns off its flashing lights and begins moving. (You can keep going if you're on the opposite side of a roadway with a physical barrier diving it, but you should still watch like a hawk for children who might be running around.)

It seems like every year we read about people either speeding around near buses or actually hitting students. This has got to stop.

If you're driving through a school zone, make sure you're aware of everything going on around you and your vehicle. Just because you don't see a bus doesn't mean a child won't be trying to cross the road.

According to stats released by Killeen ISD Monday, the district's in-person attendance on the first day back to campuses was 21,700 with a current enrollment of 44,321. Many students continue to participate in virtual school out of concern for COVID-19 safety.
