Killeen, Texas Schools Awarded Millions In Grant Funds To Improve Bus Emissions

(Killeen, Texas): Not just the wheels on Killeen ISD's buses will be brand new and going 'round and 'round. The whole bus is being replaced. Killeen ISD has been named a winner of the Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) Clean School Bus Program. Out of only twelve school districts in the state of Texas to receive the grant, KISD is the only school district in Region 12.

The Magic School Bus

Over 2,000 applications from across the nation were submitted. 391 winners were selected and awarded the $1 billion. The program will fund approximately 2,500 school bus replacements. This is a part of a five-year plan that President Biden's Bipartisan Infrastructure Law created to replace existing school buses with zero and low-emission models.

Charge Them Up

KISD will be awarded 25 electric buses and receive $9,875,000 to improve air quality for our students. By replacing existing buses in the community with electric or alternatively fueled zero-emission and low-emission buses, it will improve the air-quality not only for the students, but in the communities the buses travel in as well. In addition, funding will also go towards bidirectional charging stations over the next five years.

No More Gas Guzzling

Congratulations to Killeen Independent School District. This is a big win for the Killeen school district but also to the city of Killeen.
