Two Students Detained After Threats Against Killeen, Texas Schools
It's getting way out of hand in Killeen, Texas, and I’m not exactly sure who we need to blame.
According to KWTX, a child who attends Patterson Middle School and another child who attends Chaparral High School were charged with terroristic threats, a third-degree felony, after the Killeen Independent School District found that they had posted a potential threat against campuses on social media.
WHEN DID THIS ALL TAKE PLACE AND WHERE ARE THE STUDENTS NOW?
At 11:30 PM Sunday, October 16, the school District received an anonymous tip about the threats. Once KISD police were notified, there was an overnight investigation in which police say they learned the threats weren't serious.
However, it's KISD policy to take all threats seriously.
By Monday morning, police had a list of potential students that could be suspects and was finally narrowed down to the two that were arrested and immediately sent to the juvenile detention center. KISD says any type of threat that is directed at any of the schools in the district will be taken seriously and you will be prosecuted to the full extent of the law.
SHOULD WE STILL BE TAKING THESE FALSE THREATS SERIOUSLY?
The school district also says that the safety of everyone on campus is always the highest priority, and that no threat such as this will be tolerated.
It’s important that we talk to our children about how serious this is. If this was a joke just to get the attention of their classmates, they need to have a discussion with their parents about how serious the consequences are.
None of this is humorous to me. We have to make sure that we take every proper precaution if this happens. We’ve had so many threats this school year and too many school tragedies in recent years, yet a lot of parents and students are asking if we should we continue to take these as seriously as we did before.
My answer to that is absolutely. We don’t know what goes on in the mind of anyone these days. Always take any type of threat, especially dealing with children, seriously. We don't want to end up having to regret not acting before it was too late.
