Police say a man riding with two unrestrained kids in his car fled the scene of a traffic stop after officers found drugs in the vehicle, leaving the kids behind as he ran.

In a news release, a Corsicana Police Department spokesperson said two narcotics detectives stopped Otis Ray Jackson Jr. Wednesday because he was driving on the wrong side of the road with kids in the car. Upon stopping him, the detectives noticed there were children in the vehicle and no age appropriate seats.

One of the detectives reported smelling marijuana and asking Jackson to exit the car so he and his partner could search it. They found 4.3 ounces of marijuana and 3.8 grams of crack cocaine in the glove box of the vehicle, which they say was within easy reach of a 5-year-old child.

When one of the detectives requested that Jackson be cuffed, the suspect allegedly ran away, leaving the kids behind.

Jackson was apprehended a short time later and charged with manufacturing/delivery of a controlled substance, possession of marijuana under 5 pounds, resisting, and evading arrest.

The kids were placed in the care of Child Protective Services.
