10 New Year Traditions That Can Bring Texans Good Luck in 2022

If my fellow Texans are looking for some additional ways to bring good luck and financial prosperity into the new year, than look no further than these 10 New Years Traditions.

There's more to good luck than just crossing your fingers, and after the last couple of years, I'm willing to try just about anything to bring some good luck my way.

New Year's Traditions

There are so many traditions for New Year's Day, and just about every culture has their own way of ringing in the New Year.

A lot of these "superstitions" have lasted for centuries and while some may think it's all just nonsense (and they may be right), I'm actually putting some faith into it this year to see if 2022 is actually a "luckier" year than 2021.

It shouldn't be too difficult seeing that 2021 wasn't really all that lucky for most thanks to the continued COVID-19 pandemic.

New Year Tradition - Family Style With The Triple B

Before I start, I'll share a family tradition that's been passed down from generation to generation in my family.

It's the Triple B: Beans, Beer and BBQ

This tradition supposedly dates back over a century. My great, great, great grandpa Beaver was known to eat a big bowl of beans and drink 3 beers at about 9pm on New Year's Eve.

Once the clock struck midnight, he'd let out a giant fart, then dig into the BBQ and drink 3 more beers before passing out.

Charged for the New Year

According to to my great, great, great grandpa Beaver, this would help get the new year started by providing the best sleep he'd get all year. He wouldn't awake 'til around 7:30 AM to a big plate of bacon and eggs. After New Year's Day, he would awake at the crack of dawn to tend to the farm.

Triple-G Beaver said sleeping in on New Year's Day would help reset his body clock and provide him with all the extra sleep he needed until the end of the year. It must have worked nicely, as my great, great, great grandpa Beaver lived to be around 102 years old.

However you plan on ringing in the new year, I hope 2022 brings you all that you want with lots of good health, happiness and prosperity.

A Kiss at Midnight

Pucker up! According to old English and German folklore, this tradition may “indicate that whoever a person is with at midnight portends what type of luck they will have for the rest of the year."

Eat 12 Grapes at Midnight

Eat 12 grapes, one for each month of the year, in the first 12 seconds of the new year and, as the ol' wives' tale says, you'll have good luck and prosperity the entire upcoming year.

Collard Greens and Black-Eyed Peas

This here's some fine eatin' for New Year's Day. Collard greens and black-eyed peas are a Southern favorite and a must in my house on January 1. The black-eyed peas are a symbol for luck, while the collard greens represent green, as in money. Financial prosperity for the new year? Yes, please!

Open Your Windows and Doors

Open all the doors and windows on New Year's Eve will help blow out the old year while welcoming in the new year. Out with the old, in with the new.

Smash a Plate

Besides just being fun to do, the Danish tradition of smashing a plate at the front door of family and friends can bring good luck.

Door Decoration

A symbol of good luck and fertility for the Greeks, hang some onions on your front door as a way to invite that good luck in for the new year.

Wear Colored Underwear

Wearing new, colored underwear can have a different meaning depending on which color you choose. Yellow is a good choice as it signifies wealth. Wearing yellow underwear can help usher in luck, money, and happiness in the new year.

Polka Dots and Wear White

In the Philippines, roundness signifies prosperity, so wearing polka dots on new Year's Eve can lead to wealth. White is a symbol of new beginnings, peace, and prosperity, so wearing white on New Year's Eve can lead to new beginnings for the new year.

Serve Up Some Fish

It's been said that since fish always swim forward, they represent progress. I can buy into that, and fish scales are round, resembling coins, so financial prosperity could be straight ahead. Making a fish dish is a must on New Year's Eve.

Resolutions

Make a New Year's resolution. People have been doing it for 4,000 years. The ancient Babylonians would celebrate their new year by making promises to the Gods to pay off any debts and return borrowed items in return for good fortune with crops and farming for the upcoming year. Thus the New Year's resolution was born.

Of course resolutions have changed over the years, and breaking those resolutions are pretty common these days. They say most New Year's resolutions will be broken by January 19.

You make a resolution, you break a resolution, try again next year.
