U.S. Senator Ted Cruz visited Fort Hood for the first time on Tuesday.

Cruz toured the post and had lunch with soldiers who recently returned from deployment in Afghanistan before addressing the media, where he promised to continue the work of Kay Bailey Hutchinson, who was in office before him.

Cruz served as a member of the Senate Armed Services Committee last month, where he heard testimony from Army leadership regarding sexual assault in the military. Cruz voted for an amendment to remove the decision of bringing charges from the defendant's chain of command in sexual assault cases. The committee instead approved an amendment in which a commander's decision in an assault case would be reviewed by the next level of command.

Cruz also addressed topics including the upcoming trial of the accused Fort Hood shooter and the furloughs which will begin at Fort Hood next week.
