Busted! TX Judge Who Rules on DWI Cases Arrested on Drunk Driving

A Travis County judge that regularly presides over cases involving drug and alcohol-related traffic offenses was arrested on Saturday, May 7th, and charged with driving while intoxicated.

DWI Judge Arrested for DWI

FOX7 Austin reports that Travis County Sheriff's Office says Judge John Lipscombe was arrested after deputies were called to a hotel near The Domain in North Austin Saturday night after the judge tried to back into a parking spot that was occupied by a car.

Someone tried to stop him and then an argument started, according to KXAN. After that, Judge Lipscombe drove around the parking lot, parked in a handicapped spot, and went inside the hotel lobby. The arrest affidavit said he appeared to be disoriented, and was slow to answer questions when deputies arrived.

Just a Couple of Drinks

Judge Lipscombe told deputies the he "had a couple of drinks at his house but not even to get messy." Those drinks were two double shots of rum and Coke while he was at his home, but he couldn't remember when he began or finished drinking. Judge Lipscombe refused a field sobriety test, stating he had recently broken his ankle.

Judge Lipscombe was arrested and charged with driving while intoxicated, which is a Class B misdemeanor.

Not a good look for a judge who, according to public records, had more than two dozen cases of DWI on his docket for Tuesday.

Hey, we are all human. People make mistakes, but considering his job, Judge Lipscombe should really know better than to get behind the wheel after having some drinks. He's lucky he's only facing DWI charges and no one was injured.
