Up to 13 Feared Dead in Volcanic Eruption off New Zealand
TAURANGA, New Zealand | By NICK PERRY
Authorities say a volcanic eruption off the New Zealand coast has killed at least five people and left eight others missing and feared dead.
The disaster took place Monday on White Island as dozens of tourists explored the volcano's moon-like surface.
Helicopters landed on the island despite the danger and helped rescue dozens of people. The site is considered too dangerous for rescuers to search for the missing.
And Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern says aircraft have flown over and “no signs of life have been seen at any point.”
