Police saved a woman's life this morning while responding to a call about a duplex fire in Waco.

KWTX reported that police who arrived before fire crews had to rescue a woman who was bound to a wheelchair. Thankfully they were able to get her out safely.

The fire began very early Monday morning around 4:30 a.m. at a duplex in the 2500 block of North Morrow Avenue.

When the fire crews arrived to the scene, three residents had already gotten out of harm'ss way from the fire.

John Johnson, Battalion Chief of the Waco Fire Department, said police knocked a door down to save the woman in the wheelchair.

The duplex took heavy smoke and damage form the fire on one side of the structure. The flames caused $45,000 in damage, and are believed to have started in the kitchen.

Assistance from the American Red Cross was offered, but was rejected by the residents.
